Housing / Accommodations
A loving and supportive home environment, one that mirrors a natural family, is proven to have multiple benefits for people with medical, intellectual and developmental disabilities. Various research studies and organizational experiences have shown that the family home model is one of the most effective residential services, based on costs and, more importantly, personal outcomes, that are available for children and adults with disabilities.
People who need long-term services and supports want more options to live outside institutions. This makes our family home an attractive option.
We offer:
-
A more home-like setting than large residential options
-
Services and schedules tailored to the individual’s needs, and
-
Greater involvement in the community and access to natural supports.
Currently, we have two Residential Care Homes. One for children and the other for adults. They are located within 1 block of each other (3 houses apart).
Children live with Foster Parents/Family Caregivers who are certified Health Care Aids, Health Care Workers, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Registered Nurses and have strong skills and experience in providing health and social services.
Adults live in a completely remodeled and handicapped accessible home. The home is staffed 24/7 with certified Health Care Aids and/or Licensed Practical Nurses.
Residents are provided personal privacy and privacy of possessions to the best of our ability. Family and friends are treated with respect and dignity and are afforded privacy as required during visits.
Residents have access to all resident common areas at any time of the day or night where possible.
Above all we are committed to providing every resident with a home in a neighbourhood and community, where they can live as independently and comfortably as possible.

Person-Centered Individual Care Plans
We believe that people's lives improve when provided with the individual attention and opportunities necessary to support their growth. Each client has the opportunity to learn and develop new skills when afforded the opportunity and they are encouraged to participate fully regarding decisions that will impact his/her life. We believe that Person-Centered Care is more than meeting the person’s care needs or improving their health outcomes; it is about understanding the person as a whole.
We realize that it is both difficult on the individual as well as their family members to be very far from each other. In order to lessen this worry, we strive to include family members as much as possible and provide them with information on how their loved one is doing.
We develop Person-Centered Individual Care Plans and resources in consultation with the individual, Nunavut Family Services, family members, medical professionals, health care providers, community services personnel and our staff to learn about the person’s life history, present, and future aspirations.
We aim to create and deliver high quality programming that is specifically tailored to the strengths and needs of our clients, age appropriate, their expressed interests and is sensitive to the cultural and community issues identified as important by the clients.
We encourage clients to develop positive and meaningful relationships with peers, caregivers and the community. This also helps to provide clients with a positive sense of self-worth.
We are known for creative program development, effective service delivery, strong community roots and good outcomes for the individuals we serve.
Aftercare follow-up services
When residents are placed in our care, the underlying goal is to get them well enough to reunite them with their families as soon as possible. We work together with the respective social worker to implement strategies that may include:
-
family engagement
-
maintaining family and cultural connections
-
regular visits among family members and with the worker
-
parent education, among others.
Returning children home often requires intensive, family-centered services to support a safe and stable family. Services are always tailored to each client and their family's circumstances. The following resources offer an array of practices and strategies that support family reunification efforts:
-
Engaging parents in reunification
-
Working together with the medical team and home community social worker to assess readiness for reunification
-
Educating the family members about the client regarding their health, nutrition program, medication management, sleep patterns, irritability/aggression
